Apple Tree Gourmet Bakery (41B Newkirk Plaza) opened in September 2020 and is located a few feet away from the west exit of the Newkirk Plaza subway station. This storefront was the site of a pizzeria in the 1960s that was burned down in 1971, along with an adjoining U.S. Post Office in a fire started by teens. Thereafter it served as a diner, a video store, and a Subway sandwich franchise.
